Useful Facts about Rarotonga

Rarotonga, the largest of the 15 Cook Islands, is the arrival point for international airlines and is the hub of tourist activity, local commerce and population. It is a volcanic island with lush tropical vegetation, stunning mountains, white sandy beaches and tranquil lagoons.

Rarotonga airport is on the north west coast, 3km from Avarua town. On arrival all visitors must present a ticket for return or onward travel and a passport which is valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay. A visitor permit for 31 days is granted to all visitors on arrival. Visas can be extended for up to 6 months at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration on Rarotonga. Departure tax is NZ$30 or NZ$15 for children under 12 years.

The Cook Islands uses NZ$ currency and also has some local coins and a $3 note but they are only valid in the Cook Islands. They also make wonderful souvenires.

Westpac bank at the airport opens for all international flights. Major credit cards are accepted at the larger shops.

Cook Islands time is 10 hours behind GMT, 22 hours behind New Zealand.

Electricity is 240v/40Hz (same as UK and NZ). Plugs are 3 flat pins the same as NZ.

Rarotonga is about 32km around and there are shops, restaurants and accommodation places scattered all round the coastal road. Public buses travel in both directions from Avarua town departing every 30 minutes during the day. Cars, motor scooters and bicycles are all available for hire. A Cook Islands drivers licence is required for motorised transport. These can be obtained from the police station temporary office at Avatiu wharf for NZ$10.
